About Us

Our Sacred Lineage: Gaddi Nashin of Khwaja Garib Nawaz

We are the esteemed Gaddi Nashin (hereditary spiritual torchbearers) of the Holy Shrine of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (H.A.), affectionately known as Khwaja Gharib Nawaz, the Sultan of Hind. Our profound connection to this sacred site stems from a direct lineage tracing back to Hazrat Khwaja Syed Fakhruddin Gurdezi Chishti (H.A.), the revered Khadim-e-Khas (chief attendant) and first cousin of Gharib Nawaz (H.A.).

Hazrat Fakhruddin (R.A.), born in 544 Hijri (1150 AD), was divinely instructed by Hazrat Khwaja Usman Harooni (R.A.) to accompany Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (H.A.) on his spiritual journey to India. Since that pivotal moment, our family—the Chishti Syedzadgan (Hereditary Khadim)—has dedicated over 800 years of unwavering service to Khwaja Gharib Nawaz, upholding a legacy of devotion and spiritual guardianship back to Hazrat Khwaja Syed Fakhruddin Gurdezi Chishti (H.A.), the Khadim-e-Khas (chief attendant) and first cousin of Gharib Nawaz (H.A.).

Born in 544 Hijri (1150 AD), Hazrat Fakhruddin (R.A.) was instructed by Hazrat Khwaja Usman Harooni (R.A.) to accompany Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (H.A.) to India. Since then, our family—the Chishti Syedzadgan (Hereditary Khadim)—has served Khwaja Gharib Nawaz with devotion for over 800 years.

Who Are the Khadims of Ajmer Sharif?

The Khadims of Ajmer Sharif are far more than mere caretakers; we are the spiritual attendants (Mujawirs) and hereditary custodians entrusted with the sacred duty of serving the shrine of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (R.A.) across generations. Our unique role is deeply rooted in history and spiritual tradition. We are also recognized as:

  • Syedzadgan: Noble descendants of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), signifying our revered lineage.
  • Mujawirs, Khuddam, Gaddi Nashin, and Duagos: Terms that collectively describe our roles as spiritual attendants, servants, hereditary successors, and those who perform special prayers on behalf of devotees worldwide.

Our Sacred Duties Include:

  • Maintaining all daily rituals at the Holy Shrine with utmost precision and devotion.
  • Praying for visiting and remote devotees, ensuring their supplications reach the blessed court of Khwaja Garib Nawaz.
  • Conducting Chadar, Langar, Mannat, and Deg services, facilitating these essential spiritual practices for pilgrims.
  • Welcoming pilgrims and providing authentic guidance, sustenance (free food), and spiritual support to all who seek blessings at the Dargah.

Spiritual Lineage & Historical Legacy: A Timeless Trust

Hazrat Khwaja Syed Fakhruddin Gurdezi Chishti (R.A.) held a unique and profound closeness to Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (R.A.) during his lifetime, a fact affirmed by Hazrat Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (R.A.). Following the Wisaal (passing) of Khwaja Saheb, Hazrat Fakhruddin (R.A.) continued to meticulously manage the Khanqah (Sufi lodge), Langar Khana (community kitchen), and Tosha Khana (storehouse for offerings), ensuring the continuity of the Dargah's operations and spiritual services.

His passing in Ajmer on 25th Rajab 642 Hijri / 1245 AD marked a significant moment, and his holy tomb rests beside the Mazar-e-Pak, within what is now known as Tosha Khana. The present Khadim families proudly descend from his blessed sons:

  • Hazrat Syed Masood (R.A.)
  • Hazrat Syed Mahboob Bahlol (R.A.)
  • Hazrat Syed Ibrahim (R.A.)

This unbroken chain of spiritual succession underscores our authentic connection to the very origins of the Chishti Order in India

Our Indispensable Role in the Holy Shrine

Only the Khadim of Ajmer Sharif are uniquely entrusted with critical responsibilities that ensure the sanctity and proper functioning of the Dargah:

  • Custodians of the Shrine Keys: We are entrusted with the keys of the Shrine, including the Tosha Khana, symbolizing our guardianship.
  • Authorized Opening and Closing: We are the sole individuals authorized to open and close the Gumbad Mubarak (Holy Dome) daily, accompanied by the sacred call to prayer (Azan).
  • Receiving Nazrana: We are permitted to receive Nazrana (offerings) from Zaireen (pilgrims) inside the Shrine, a right recognized by centuries of tradition and legal precedent.
  • Legally and Spiritually Recognized: Our role as custodians and keyholders has been legally and spiritually recognized since the Mughal era, through the British period, and continues to be affirmed in post-independence India.

We remain steadfast in upholding the Chishty Khanqahi Nizam—a timeless legacy of dedicated service, profound prayer, and unwavering spiritual dedication.

The Tradition of Nazrana (Offerings): A Heartfelt Connection

Nazrana is a deeply personal and heartfelt offering from Zaireen—entirely voluntary, spiritually significant, and a personal expression of devotion. It can manifest in various forms, including:

  • Chadar: Offering sacred coverings for the Mazaar.
  • Mannat (vow fulfillment): Fulfilling pledges made in gratitude for prayers answered.
  • Langar (community food): Contributing to the communal meals that feed thousands.
  • Deg (cauldron offerings): Participating in the large-scale cooking of food for distribution.
  • Dua (special prayers): Requesting specific prayers to be made on one's behalf.

Historical documents and court rulings, including those from the Mughal emperors Akbar and Jahangir, have consistently recognized the Khadim's’ inherent rights to receive and manage these offerings as an integral part of their spiritual services, affirming the deep-rooted tradition.

Pilgrims Are Our Cherished Guests: A Tradition of Hospitality

Every pilgrim who embarks on a journey to Ajmer Sharif is considered a cherished guest of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (R.A.). We, the Khadims, embrace this tradition by serving them with profound love, genuine hospitality, and utmost honor. For centuries, Khadim households have extended their generosity by offering:

  • Free accommodation: Providing a place of rest for weary travelers.
  • Free meals (Langar): Sharing blessed sustenance with all.
  • Ziyarat assistance: Guiding pilgrims through their spiritual visit.
  • Personalized duas and services: Offering individual prayers and support tailored to their needs.

For those unable to undertake the physical journey, we facilitate official sacred Ziyarat services through this website, ensuring that distance does not hinder spiritual connection.

Our Present Custodianship & Global Reach

Among the 23rd-generation descendants, Syed Adil Hussain Chishty stands as a humble servant and Gaddi Nashin (spiritual successor) of Khwaja Baba (R.A.). Born on 31st March 1984 in the holy city of Ajmer Sharif, Syed Adil Hussain Chishti continues this sacred service under divine responsibility, maintaining the spiritual dignity of this blessed shrine in accordance with the timeless teachings of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (H.A.) and the revered Chishti Sufi Order.
